Mexican Hot Chocolate, known as “chocolate caliente” in Mexico, is a rich and indulgent beverage cherished for its unique blend of flavors. This traditional drink combines the velvety smoothness of chocolate with a tantalizing hint of spice, creating a sensory experience that warms both body and soul. It’s a beloved staple in Mexican cuisine, enjoyed during festive celebrations, chilly evenings, or simply as a comforting treat any time of the day.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 4 ounces Mexican chocolate, chopped (such as Ibarra or Abuelita)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for a spicy kick)
  • Whipped cream, for serving
  • Cinnamon sticks, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the whole milk until it’s steaming but not boiling.
  2. Add the chopped Mexican chocolate to the warm milk, stirring constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Stir in the granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and cayenne pepper (if using). Continue to stir until the sugar is dissolved and the spices are well incorporated.
  4. Taste the hot chocolate and adjust the sweetness or spiciness according to your preference by adding more sugar or cayenne pepper as needed.
  5. Once the hot chocolate is well combined and heated through, remove it from the heat and pour it into mugs.
  6. Top each mug with a dollop of whipped cream and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy the comforting flavors of authentic Mexican hot chocolate!

Note: This traditional Mexican hot chocolate recipe serves 4. Adjust the ingredients accordingly if you need to make a larger or smaller batch.
